Time
The moon has been hanging around the Earth for 4.5 billion years. Ive been hanging around the Earth for 58 years. I feel old some days. And when I think how long the planets have circled the sun,I still feel old.
We have no true concept of time.We have no idea what 4.5 billion years is. All we know is it is a long time. But then 58 years feels like a long time.
I think about time a lot as I get older. I feel sometimes like our life is like a spinning top. When we are young our lives are centered in the middle of the top, where the circumference is it's widest, therefore each spin at that point is at it's longest width.and as we get older we move closer to the top where the circumference is smaller and the length of the rotation is shorter. So even though our days are still 24 hours long, the days seem shorter the older we get.
I had a golden retriever once who passed away at the age of 12. I remember thinking how short a life span that was. But my dog lived a full life. He had no expectations. He just got up every morning feeling like he was going to live forever. But when he got sick I felt for the first time he knew his life was going to end soon.I could see it in his eyes. He could hardly walk towards the end,but the night before he died he somehow managed to find his way to my bed and he lay next to me the entire night. He had never slept there before. It was if he knew he was leaving me,and he wanted to spend one last night as close as he could to me.
Those are the nights I wish time stood still.

Flow
Our lives are floating down a river, ever changing, swirling like fallen leaves that have landed in the water .We always assume that when we are in the minute, time stands still, but that isn't so.Time never slows, never comes to a stop.Everything is constantly moving, turning, lifting, swirling, moving.
We take a picture of the moment, but the moment is gone once we click the camera. We look at old photographs and see a soldier during the civil war as he is looking into the lens of the camera as if he is looking into our soul. What happened after that moment?.Did he get up and walk away,or did he stop to ponder the significance of his actions. We will never know.
We are in constant motion. The time it took you to read this you have aged, not significantly, but you have aged. And age is a moment by moment event. We see someone everyday yet we don't notice the changes. The leaves on the tree have fallen, they will fall again.
We are in perpetual free fall, sliding down the window of life, landing at our destinations to only find the destination has changed. Life is a curious thing. As it should be.

Looking down...
Those of you scared of heights may want to re- think reading this. I was looking at my feet this morning.I had just gotten out of the shower and just happened to glance down at my toes, all nice and clean and everything. Then I sat down and just stared at my feet. I realized I really hadn't looked at my feet in a very long time. I realized at that moment that if I had to identify my feet to the police I wouldn't be able to pick them out in a line up.In fact I probably would of sent the wrong pair of feet to prison. and that's just wrong on so many levels.
Which reminds me of that phrase "I would know it like the back of my hand". Not me. I couldn't describe what the back or front of my hands look like. I never really look at them. I use them a lot,but who really pays attention to them. Maybe women do cause they are always putting globs of moisturizing lotion on them.
So what do we mainly pay attention to you? Our head. Our whole being revolves around that cylinder shaped mass that is rotating on average 5 feet six inches above the ground. It's like our entire universe revolves around that thing we have resting atop our shoulders. We think of our body as an extension of our head. Our body is just there to carry our heads around so we can do what our head tells it to do. Which means in a way we are really floating 5 to 6 feet above ground. If you were standing on a six foot ladder you wouldn't want to fall off it.But we seem not to care we carry our heads that high everyday.
I guess some of you will think I am thinking outside the box. No,Im thinking inside my head, and it's a long way to my feet....

Doughnuts
I love doughnuts. Glazed, maple, sprinkled, custard filled. It doesn't matter. They are all good.
I could eat donuts for a living, and then retire and eat them again. I can remember as a kid moving overseas and not being able to find sugar powdered doughnuts. That was a traumatic experience for me.
I still think about that.
But what aggravates me is why do the people who make my glazed doughnuts remove the center. And then they take the center of my doughnuts and package them and turn around and sell them as doughnut holes. They are not doughnut holes. The doughnut hole is in the doughnut I just ate. What they are selling is the middle of my doughnut. Please stop this. Or I will have to stop buying glazed doughnuts. Or maybe not.

Tacos
I love tacos. There is just something about them that keeps me awake at night. Maybe it was the sweet relish Mom would put on them when I was a child. I grew up with a British mother who convinced me at an early age that sweet relish was a natural addition to my taco shell. I grew up,became an adult, and continued to always pour the relish on that homemade taco. I must of been in my twenties when it became clear to me that Mom had no idea what she was doing. I had always assumed EVERYONE put relish on their tacos. After all Mom did. And when Mom does something you assume it's normal.
It's not normal. I found that out the hard way when I got married. I realized no one except my family had ever heard of this abnormality. That was hard for me to swallow.
But I still put relish on my tacos. I can't think of not having that sweet taste layered on top of my shell.
My Mom grew up in India in the 1920's. She came to America during the 40's and had never seen a taco till years later. I spoke to my Mom recently about this story of me and my sweet relish fetish. I expected her to explain in detail how she came to put relish on my tacos back in the early 60's when I was a child. She looked at me with wide eyes at the age of 91 and simply replied... "I don't know".

Rover
I once looked into the eyes of my golden retriever and wondered why his previous owners named him Dusty. He didn't look dusty. He was a beautiful golden brown dog. That got me thinking. Why do we name our animals? Are they ours to name? Maybe Dusty wanted to be left alone, to be nameless in his 12 years on Earth. We name our children because they come from us.and if they want to change their name later on in life they have every right to do so. Dusty never had that option.
Now the argument will be that if we don't name our animals then how will they know when we call them.I can tell you that many times I called Dusty by his name and he completely ignored me.This happened more often when he was wandering off my property to visit the English bulldog next door.
I think I could of just yelled "Hey you wandering off dog",and it would of been more appropriate a name than Dusty.
I miss that old dog. Whatever his real name is.

Bigfoot.
The story of Bigfoot has captured our imagination for decades. We have all seen the blurry video of what appears to be an ape-man scrambling upright through dense forest in the outermost regions of this planet.
Mitch Hedberg, a comedian who passed away a few years ago, once said the reason Bigfoot is blurry in the videos is because in real life Bigfoot is blurry.
But what intrigues me more than that observation is how Bigfoot is a reflection of how we gravitate towards the unknown in quest of the truth. Bigfoot is real. He exists in all of us. He represents the fear of not having all the answers in life. The irony may be we shouldn't have all the answers.
So let's all take a deep breath and relax. Bigfoot will never be found. He will always be a step ahead of us.And that's how it should be......
